Now you know that I’m going to remind you because it’s July…It’sssss my birthday month! Although it doesn’t feel like this year is going to be a big celebration year, I feel like things are happening in a good way and I feel as though it’s going to be a different summer. (says, every year lol) I’ll say it again and aging but it does feel weird at 30 years old, I’m freelancing, still in Japan without a partner. All things were not on my vision board!
July is going to be all about “Do the things I wasn’t able to do.” month. I was really inspired by
issues on finances here and I want to do the same in July. I been really flimsy with my finances and I need to have a reality check. It’s not that I’m having the best time with my income either so I wanted to see how much I spend on what. If anyone has a good recommendation on a finance app???? Much appreciated since honestly the app Leslie recommended in her newsletter is not available in Japan even thought it looks great, and Japan has somehow the WORST tracking apps. I’m currently just going with the one called “Daily Budeget” but it doesn’t look sustainable, so all the recommendations will be highly appreciated xNow, let’s get into the June #juststuff edition :)

Locale feature!! haha It’s so cool to see people you know in an article you just randomly read. I ended up following her Instagram and if you are a travel enthusiast and love seeing the Euro summer shots, she gives it for you. @sickofsuburbia
A note to people of color interested in living in Japan
I think the key here was to actually say what it is - micro-agressions!!!!! It’s a thing people, wake the f up.
This super viral Note essay on Father’s day. It was rhythmical, honest and rebellious.
Elliot Page: Embracing My Trans Identity Saved Me
I particularly enjoy this newsletter because it teaches me new things about art. I always wanted to indulge in art more, and it’s so beautifully curated and!!!! the best part?? Only features wOMeN <#
A case of heartbreak? I prescribe Tracey Emin’s neons and Paula Rego’s dancers
Along with GWA, Katy Hessel’s piece on the Guardian.

Your phone is ruining your vacation
I have so much to say on this…because when I was in Vietnam most of June, I stopped using Instagram and it was so good. Surprise! I didn’t miss anything, and I was present.
I'm Getting Married, But I'll Travel Alone For The Rest of My Life
I may have recommended this before but I re-read it because I had a ‘burn out’ on solo travel in June.
I want to tell you from HerStry By Patricia Garrison
To All the Final Girls by Marlowe Granados Also this one too
ok, I’m on a new girl crush. Marlowe Granados. I mean Marlowe!!! What a name. She’s the author of Happy Hour and I could have not brought a better book with my to Vietnam for my workcation. Apperety she now has a Substack!!?
Yay!Further proof that whatever decisions you make now are not the be-all and end-all. There is always room for adjustment, no matter the time frame.
Books 📕
On that note, I read Happy Hour by Marlowe Granados for June. If you want a summer read, this is a sign you should read this. Two girls in NewYork, going out, dating, eating, going to happy hour and just doing nothing really but doing everything type of thing. It’s a thing that makes you want to go out with your friends wearing something cute.
Watch/TV/Movie 👀
A video essay which I had no idea is a format and I’m completely in LOVE! This Aftersun video essay by Will Clempner was so beautiful. Please have a watch.
Memory is inherently poetic and intransigently personal.
Lewis Capaldi: How I’m feeling now on Netflix
You might have heard him recently because of the Glastonbury festival where he needed to stop his performance because his Tourette’s was acting up and he couldn’t sing. Instead, his fans finished his songs for him. It was one of the beautiful watch and I wanted to know what he’s like and he’s a ball. I loved how genuine the film was. For this reason, it was the same feeling I got from Pamela Anderson’s Netflix’s documentary as well. I loved both of it for not sugar coding the characters.
Fresh Meat
I know this is so random and old… but I kinda loved it? After succession, I wanted to know what other famous things Jesse Armstrong made. A saw an article about “Can a nerdy awkward sitcom creator make a show about rich Americans?” This alone, tempted me and it was great.
Little Simz/Gorilla
This new Little Simz music video will probably be one of the best videos you’ll watch. She is so fireeeee.
Podcast🎤
The Mother’s Guilt. The Katheleen Folbigg’s story.
In recent news on Kathleen Folbigg being released from prison after being sentenced for 20 years for allegedly smothering her four children between 1989-1999. The story is fascinating and she was criminalized for being ‘the worst mother’ for killing four of her children while she has been maintaining innocence for years. The Mother’s Guilt podcast is a series where you can hear all about this until she was released from prison.
The Great Women Artist Podcast/ Marilyn Minter
Have I ever told people that I’ve loved Marilyn Minter since I was around 21 or something. My mom’s aunt who sadly passed away has introduced me of her art once at a gallery in NewYork and I loved it. This conversation that is hosted by
is fantastic and I looooooved that Marilyn Minter would love to speak to Joan Mitchell. Of course!!!! Also, I had no idea, in 2007, Marilyn Miter photographed Pamela Anderson. So fab?The Louis Theroux Podcast with Amelia Demoldenburg
I love both of them and it’s truly inspiring to hear a creator like Amelia how she build her brand not overnight, but over a decade.
Some other things 💎
I made this and this from ….of course
and I loooove the *jammy tomato pasta salad. I really really can’t use a lot of money now, but I’m really eyeing this lovely ring from Daphine, a rec from the recent news letter . Someone showed me this Instagram account who’s a visual artist called Jan Hakon Erichsen. It’s so interesting how he was 760,000 followers by simply just…destroying things. This article on why Sarah Jessica Parker keeps playing Carrie Brandshaw is on my next reading list. Has everyone read the profile on the NYT on Elizabeth Holmes? The article didn’t get a good review once it was out apparently, but the writer who covered it has done a podcast talking it here on longform and these are all the things that I want to devour once I have time. Aerie is having a sale, and I do love how they have comfortable underwear and some cute swim suites too for the price? Montes & Clark, a beautiful handcrafted textile pieces for kitchen wear.Thank you so much for reading this month (was suppose to go out in June) #juststuff. Is there something else you want to know on just stuff? I’m trying to make a review account on Instagram on things I really loved, but still thinking about the name. I’ll see you soon, probably next week on Wednesday for another edition of my normal essays. Thank you again for reading x much love bisou x Megumi
