#juststuff4
No thoughts, just stuff, round 4!! Happy Sunday. It's been a minute since I recommended anything...but my god...I have so much!
Books📗
-Love Stories by Trent Dalton
I took this book with me to Europe (I know a huge book to take around), and I kind of struggled finishing it just because a lot of it was very …. with a lack of better words, cliché to me. But then I listened to my favorite podcast and they did a book club on this book, you can listen to it here. I wasn’t familiar with Trend Dalton’s writing or even who he was. He’s a very acclaimed journalist in Australia and many people love his writing because of his vulnerability and rawness. You need to embrace the writing and how he tells stories in this book. It’s purposely made to make you feel like, oh this is a bit much I think because it was during covid when a lot of people needed that touch of love and affection. I loved the concept of the book and it was a beautiful read, and I might re-read it just because I didn’t immerse myself in it enough.

-She Feared Giving Birth Would Kill Her. She Fled Her State for an Abortion.
-DEAR SUGAR, THE RUMPUS ADVICE COLUMN #77: THE TRUTH THAT LIVES THERE
This Appears to be a very popular advice column that I stumbled upon from another newsletter. This one in particular was so painful to read, just because ALL women literally go through the same shit but yet feel so alone always.
But an ethical and evolved life also entails telling the truth about oneself and living out that truth.
Podcasts 🎤
-Not a podcast, but an event that Dolly Alderton (Sorry! She’s just gonna keep coming up no matter what!) attended.
What will survive of us is love -By Phillip Larkin
-How to fail: Jordan Stephens on male vulnerability, anger and getting naked
-Into it : A portrait of the artist as Taylor Swift
After the beautiful Midnights album by Taylor Swift came out, this vulture podcast did an amazing job explaining why we always have the need of speaking ‘ill’ of Taylor’s love songs. They make a great point about Taylor being ‘petty’ and why do people keep saying that. I disagree of course, and the queen is just a master in telling her stories in her own way.
-Into it: The abortion Episode
The same one but different episode. It talks about how abortions is depicted in TV but in reality, it is happening in a very different way. Representation of women getting abortions is becoming more normal, but yet it’s not as accurate as it appears on screen.
-Longform 472: Michael Schulman
This was so GOOD! If you read that viral New Yorker profile about Jeremy Strong who plays Kendall on Succession, you will love this episode because the writer himself explains how it came about and the behind the scenes basically.
-Tina ‘Diana-core’ Brown by Celebrity book club
I think I recommended Tina Brown’s Palace Paper a while back, but this podcast read the book and just talk about it in a comical way and I found it pretty enjoyable to listen to.
Shows 📺
-Bad Sisters
If you already heard enough about this show…well YOU SHOULD HAVE! because it’s fucking good! Just stop watching anything, and watch this.
-House of the Dragon
Was I into this? I don’t know…But it was pretty watchable towards the end. I have to say, I am excited to watch the new season if they are making one!
-The Resort on peacock
It’s kind of a slow burn show and you need a bit of patience to it, but it gets interesting.
-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer story
I do tend to watch serial killer shows… and this one, I have to say is pretty unsettling. It’s just upsetting to know that his neighbor knew something was wrong and was asking for help to the authorities but nothing was ever done. A play on racism, classism and just so much other disgusting stuff. Also…there are a lot of discussions of why does Netflix keep producing shows like this and have the families re-live the trauma they have been through. I saw a few halloween costumes this year dressed as Jeffrey Dahmer and I don’t think it’s funny. As much as I do watch these shows, I think this will be the last of it because I don’t want to contribute to it. Just like I would LOVE to own a pair of SKIMS but I don’t want to contribute to that family.
-*This is NOT a recommendation but a caution of DO NOT watch* From Scratch
Netflix somehow managed to create a show that is Emily in Paris but the Italian version and OF COURSE these American girls (not me!) are falling in love with fucking CHEFS. She’s not in PR but she’s in art now honey. I feel attacked every time I watch this narrative. In the beginning, this American/Italian girl tells the main character Amy (Of course your name is AMY LOL) ‘don’t hang out with any Americans honey, you won’t get the full Italian experience’ ‘Get a lover, that’s free’ LIKE NO SHIT. Episode 1 was enough for me.
Movie 🎥
-King Richard
The story of Selena and Venus Williams father, Richard William. My god!!!! I cried the entire time, and I have one thing that I took away from this, consistency is SO important for anything.
-Licorice Pizza
God! I mean the aesthetics on this show is just chef’s kiss! I love it so much. HAIM’s aesthetics are just so good, I love them so much. Does anyone know why the fuck it’s called licorice pizza though?
-C’mon C’mon
I know I’m late to the game on this one, but it was indeed such a beautiful film about fatherhood, childhood, motherhood, being a wife, being a sister, being a brother and all these family dynamics. In the movie, the mom who plays Viv (Gabbi Hoffmann) has this line to her son and I wrote it down because I thought it was beautiful.
Even though we love each other, we’ll never know everything about each other. That’s just how it is.
💛Other things I’m into💛
This Bra that seems wonderful. These veja sneakers… There’s these beautiful cups I found at a restaurant in Rome while I was eating Amatriciana and I asked where they got it, and it’s from Tognana. I don’t know if they ship to Japan but I want a few for home. ObSESSED with this perfume I got in Firenze at Aqua Flor called Derwish. It’s this vanilla smell that just hits the spot. (Everyone loves it) There are SO MANY books on my list again..but I haven’t read a lot of the books I have here at home yet. Hysterical (I mean the book cover is just) , Letters to a young poet, How to fall out of love madly Obviously there is more but I’m not boring you with more.
